An Iowa school principal has been placed on administrative leave following his arrest on suspicion of first-degree harassment.

Justin Blietz, 40, was booked into a Linn County jail on Saturday, 14 March, just two days before his wife filed a formal restraining order against him.

Court records reveal a history of legal friction within the household, including a previous petition for "relief from domestic abuse" filed by his wife in March 2025, which was later dismissed without prejudice.

The founding principal of Cedar Rapids Prep allegedly made violent threats against a woman during the incident.

According to a criminal complaint, Blietz allegedly told the victim he would slit her throat and "watch her die," a statement that has sent shockwaves through the school community he helped establish.

Although he was released on Sunday on his own recognisance, the charter school's overseeing body, Opportunity Education, confirmed he has been removed from his duties pending further investigation.

The arrest occurred amidst ongoing divorce proceedings between Blietz and his wife. Despite his professional profile claiming he "creates a culture where all students feel safe, supported, and connected," the recent allegations paint a starkly different picture of his private conduct.

His wife’s latest request for a protective order on Monday highlights the escalating nature of the situation. At present, it remains unclear whether Blietz has entered a plea or retained legal counsel.

The Cedar Rapids police continue to investigate the specifics of the harassment charge as the community seeks clarity.
