Meta Reality Labs undergoes 'AI-native' overhaul to boost productivity
Meta introduces 'AI Builder' roles and 'pod' structures within Reality Labs
Meta has initiated a significant structural overhaul within its Reality Labs division, transitioning a 1,000-employee team into a fully "AI-native" organisation.
According to a leaked internal memo, the social media giant is rebranding staff as "AI Builders" and organising them into small, agile "pods."
This strategic shift aims to fundamentally rewire how the company operates, moving away from traditional hierarchies toward a flatter structure advocated by CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
Within this new framework, every member of the affected division will hold one of three specific titles: AI Builder, AI Pod Lead, or AI Org Lead.
The "pods" are designed to be multidisciplinary, allowing engineers to take on diverse tasks, such as design work, to achieve specific product outcomes.
These groups are managed by Pod Leads, while Org Leads oversee broader performance reviews and promotions, processes that are now reportedly supported by specialised "AI systems."
Meta has emphasised that this reorganisation is intended to drive a "step change" in engineering productivity and is unrelated to the recent layoffs that impacted hundreds of staff across Reality Labs on Wednesday.
The move aligns with Zuckerberg’s broader vision for 2026, which he has identified as the year artificial intelligence will "dramatically change the way we work."
He suggests that projects previously requiring vast teams may soon be handled by a single, highly talented individual. Currently, many Meta employees have already updated their professional profiles to reflect their new titles.
As the company continues its aggressive push into the metaverse and augmented reality, this pilot program serves as a blueprint for the future of technical collaboration at the firm.
