Microsoft achieves Copilot sales targets following strategic sales revamp

Microsoft has successfully met its ambitious sales targets for the Copilot artificial intelligence add-on, following a period of intense scrutiny over slow adoption rates.

During a company town hall meeting on Thursday, Judson Althoff, CEO of Microsoft’s commercial business, informed employees that the firm had achieved its bold objectives for the quarter ending 31 March.

The tech giant had previously faced criticism after disclosing in January that it had secured 15 million seats for Microsoft 365 Copilot, representing just three per cent of its standard commercial base.

However, Althoff confirmed that a strategic revamp of the company’s sales approach has since yielded positive results.

"Those were hit for Q3," Althoff stated, according to transcripts reviewed by CNBC, referring to the fiscal third-quarter goals set alongside Finance Chief Amy Hood.

The $30-per-month AI assistant, which became widely available in 2023, is a cornerstone of Microsoft’s strategy to monetise its significant investments in OpenAI and data centre infrastructure.

Despite a 23 per cent decline in stock value during the first quarter of 2026 amid fears of heightened competition, the company is now doubling down on its generative AI roadmap.

Althoff noted that the sales team is now focused on converting standard enterprise chat users into paid Copilot subscribers. Looking ahead, the executive expressed strong "confidence" in hitting even more aggressive targets established for the June quarter.

As investors demand clear evidence that AI-enhanced products will boost long-term profitability, Microsoft’s latest internal performance suggests a turning point in the commercial integration of generative technology across global business sectors.
