X video link issue sparked by April Fools’ Day prank
Viral claims regarding the removal of the copy video link feature on X are revealed as a seasonal hoax
A wave of confusion swept through the social media platform X on Wednesday, 1 April 2026, as millions of users wrongly believed the "copy video link" feature had been permanently disabled.
The panic began after several high-profile accounts shared misleading screenshots and claims that the platform’s owner, Elon Musk, had removed the functionality.
This triggered a surge of conspiracy theories, with some supporters of Donald Trump suggesting the move was a retaliatory act of censorship after the president allegedly appeared to ignore Musk on camera.
However, fact-checkers and community notes quickly clarified that the entire episode was an elaborate April Fools’ Day prank designed to "boost engagement" for specific accounts.
Despite the widespread frustration and the proliferation of memes lamenting the "loss" of the feature, the ability to copy video links remains fully operational.
According to social media experts, while X has recently updated its mobile interface, the core sharing tools have not been removed.
"Users can still copy links to posts containing videos via the Share icon and selecting 'Copy link to Post'," one expert explained on Thursday.
The confusion was further exacerbated by engaged farmers who exploited the platform's history of sudden UI changes to spread misinformation.
While the mobile app's updated layout may require an extra step for some, the direct sharing of video content continues to work as expected on both iOS and Android devices.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly digital misinformation can travel, especially when tied to prominent public figures.
As X continues to evolve under Musk’s leadership, the global community is increasingly urged to verify viral claims through official channels before contributing to online hysteria.
