The British Monarchy has been hit by the loss of a key figure in the King’s inner circle, overshadowing the twenty-first wedding anniversary of King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Richard "Alec" Cobbe, a celebrated Irish designer and longtime confidant of the King, passed away at the age of 81 at his home in Surrey on 31 March.

The loss of the "renaissance man," who was a painter, conservator, and collector, has deeply affected the Sovereign during what was intended to be a celebratory week.

Charles and Camilla’s anniversary, which fell on Thursday, was marked quietly as the King processed the departure of a man he had trusted for decades.

"This was meant to be a quietly meaningful milestone, but the timing of Alec's passing has inevitably cast a shadow over it," a palace insider revealed.

Cobbe was not merely a professional collaborator but a vital creative partner who helped shape the aesthetic tone of numerous royal projects and historic interiors, including those at Windsor Castle.

The King had recently demonstrated his high regard for Cobbe’s lifelong dedication to the arts. On 13 February 2026, His Majesty appointed the designer as a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) in recognition of his illustrative work and service.

Beyond his professional achievements, Cobbe was known for his vast collection of historic keyboard instruments and his technical expertise in art restoration.

As the royal family continues to manage a complex public schedule and personal finance interests, this loss leaves a significant gap in the King’s private creative world.

Charles and Camilla first wed in 2005, and while their bond remains his "rock," the absence of such a trusted friend has undeniably tempered the joyous occasion.
