Many individuals aiming for weight loss or fitness milestones treat ten thousand steps as a definitive daily goal. However, Sumit Dubey, fitness expert and founder of the SDF centre, recently clarified the truth behind this popular benchmark.

In a discussion, he explained that this figure originated from a historical advertising campaign rather than scientific research.

"Folks who pay attention to their health often aim to walk 10,000 steps every day. Yet while plenty enjoy chasing that figure, research doesn’t firmly back up the specific count," he noted.

What matters more?

While tracking footsteps can be useful, focusing solely on the total misses other vital components of health.

Sumit highlighted that heart function and blood flow benefit more from routine and intensity than from a magic number.

To improve overall physical health, he recommended focusing on the following areas:

  • Consistency over volume to build lasting habits without force.
  • Walking speed to strengthen the heart and burn more energy.
  • Incorporating muscle building and flexibility into a weekly routine.
  • Taking regular stretching breaks to counteract the effects of sitting.

Does 10,000 steps work?

Sumit Dubey suggested that while hitting high step counts is not fiction, it is not a "one size fits all" solution. Real progress stems from steady motion and varying activities rather than fixed numbers.

"Real progress shows up through steady motion, different activities, sometimes even stillness done right," he added. By prioritising small, frequent shifts in movement, individuals can maintain their systems more smoothly over time.
