Kanye West faces backlash over scheduled Italy concert after European cancellations
  • Kanye West faces calls for an Italy ban following cancellations in Britain and France.
  • Pina Picierno urges the Italian government to stop the scheduled Reggio Emilia performance.
  • Over sixty-eight thousand tickets have already been sold for the July festival appearance.

The American rapper Kanye West, now known as Ye, is facing intense pressure to cancel his upcoming headline performance at the Hellwat Festival in Reggio Emilia, Italy.

Scheduled for 18 July 2026, the concert is intended to take place at the RCF Arena, a venue capable of hosting over 100,000 spectators.

However, the event has ignited a political firestorm across the country. Jewish organisations, trade unions, and anti-fascist activists are vehemently demanding that the show be axed, citing the artist's history of anti-Semitic remarks and provocative behaviour.

Pina Picierno, Vice President of the European Parliament, has been a leading voice in the opposition. Speaking to "La Gazzetta di Reggio", she urged the Italian government to follow the precedents set by the United Kingdom and France, both of which recently blocked the rapper from performing.

"The United Kingdom denied the visa. France effectively prevented the Marseille concert," Picierno noted, expressing dismay that "Italy, meanwhile, is just staying idle with 68,000 tickets sold, as if nothing had happened."

Reggio Emilia holds significant historical weight as a city honoured for its resistance against Nazi forces, making the controversy particularly poignant for residents.

While Mayor Marco Massari has distanced himself from the rapper’s rhetoric, he clarified that the authority to ban the artist rests with the Ministry of the Interior.

Despite the mounting criticism in Europe, West is still slated to perform in several other international locations this year, including Madrid, Istanbul, and Arnhem.

Festival organisers have reportedly asked the rapper to issue a formal apology to Italy to mitigate the ongoing tensions before the July date.
