Ann Jillian reveals why she walked away from Hollywood at career peak
Decades later, Jillian says she wouldn’t change her decision
Ann Jillian has opened up about her decision to step away from Hollywood at the height of her fame, revealing she chose to prioritize motherhood over her flourishing career and has no regrets.
The award-winning actress, now 76, reflected on her journey in a recent interview with Page Six, explaining that her exit from the spotlight came after she welcomed her first child at the age of 42.
“I’ve been out of it for a while… I’ve been out of it for a good reason,” she said.
Jillian, who rose to prominence as a child star under the guidance of Walt Disney, built a decades-long career spanning film and television.
She appeared in projects like Babes in Toyland and Gypsy, before gaining wider recognition on the sitcom It's a Living.
Her career reached a critical high point with The Ann Jillian Story, in which she portrayed her real-life battle with breast cancer, a performance that earned her a Golden Globe Award in 1989.
Despite that momentum, Jillian made the life-changing decision to step back from acting after becoming a mother in 1992.
“I gave birth to my one and only son when I was 42, and I took that seriously too,” she said, explaining that she did not believe she could successfully balance both a demanding career and raising a child.
While acknowledging that some women manage to juggle both, Jillian was clear about her own limits. “Maybe somebody out there can do this… for me, I recognize that I cannot,” she admitted.
For the actress, the choice ultimately came down to presence and priorities. She emphasized that trying to do everything at once meant “something is going to suffer,” and she was unwilling to miss important moments in her son’s life.
“I don’t want to be a thousand miles away if he gets a boo-boo… or when he wants to talk about something terrible or wonderful that happened at school,” she said.
With the support of her husband, Andy Murcia, Jillian embraced what she describes as her most important role.
“So, basically, I hung up my dancing shoes… and said, ‘Nope, this is the most important role I have to play right now,’” she shared.
Looking back, the actress said she remains fully at peace with her decision.
“I wouldn’t trade that for the world,” she added, underscoring that her years away from Hollywood were spent exactly where she wanted to be.
