- Taraji P. Henson publicly rebuked fellow celebrities for attending the 2024 Met Gala.
- The actress highlighted concerns regarding Jeff Bezos’s sponsorship and warehouse labour conditions.
- Activist groups joined the protest by depositing fake urine bottles inside the museum.
Taraji P. Henson has issued a scathing critique of her fellow A-listers for attending this year’s Met Gala, an event currently mired in controversy due to the sponsorship of honorary co-chairs Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos.
The Empire actress utilised her platform to co-sign a social media post from Meredith Lynch titled "a warning for celebs."
Within this post, Lynch cautioned attendees against wearing ICE Out pins, asserting that Bezos is "part of the reason we’re in this f—ing mess."
While Lynch acknowledged the fundraising necessity of the evening, she noted the irony of sponsorship from a figure who has "slashed arts funding."
Henson echoed this sentiment with a series of clapping emojis, commenting: "I am so confused by some ppl that are going. I am just like WTF ARE WE DOING!?!?!?!"
The Oscar nominee further highlighted the disparity between wealth and labour by reposting an image from My Voice My Choice.
The post juxtaposed the billionaire's £400 million superyacht with the reality that "immigrant workers in Amazon warehouses face precarious conditions, low wages, and high injury rates."
Henson pointedly captioned her Instagram Story with, "Enjoy the MET," followed by a sceptical emoji. Her absence follows a long history as a gala staple, joining stars like Zendaya and Bella Hadid who also sat out this year.
This backlash coincides with escalating "tax the rich" sentiments and local political boycotts. Henson, renowned for her roles in Hidden Figures and The Color Purple, continues to advocate for social justice alongside her upcoming film projects.
