Sam Altman management style under scrutiny as OpenAI trial enters second week

Sam Altman's management style has come under intense scrutiny as the high-stakes OpenAI trial continues into its second week in Oakland, California.

On Wednesday, jurors viewed video depositions from former top executives, including former Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati and former board member Helen Toner.

Murati, who briefly served as interim CEO during Altman's 2023 ouster, described his leadership as "difficult and chaotic," alleging that he frequently sowed distrust by telling different people "completely opposite" things to maintain control.

The testimony highlighted significant lapses in communication between the executive team and the board of directors.

Shivon Zilis, another former board member, testified that the entire board was "extremely concerned" when the blockbuster chatbot ChatGPT was released without any prior board notification or approval.

These revelations bolster Elon Musk's legal argument, which claims that the founders—Altman and Greg Brockman—abandoned the company's original non-profit mission to pursue a multi-billion-dollar commercial agenda.

Helen Toner further elaborated on the board's decision to fire Altman in 2023, citing a "pattern of behavior related to his honesty and candor."

She claimed Altman manipulated board processes and resisted oversight, creating a culture of secrecy. While Altman has previously admitted to being "conflict-averse," the trial paints a picture of a leader whose management tactics were a central factor in the company’s internal instability.

As Musk seeks $150 billion in damages, the trial is surfacing private messages and depositions that reveal the deep-seated friction behind the scenes at the world's leading AI firm.
