Netflix faces questions over 'cut' Kevin Hart roast jokes

Widespread confusion and debate have erupted following claims that Netflix cut controversial jokes from The Roast of Kevin Hart.

Reports circulating online alleged that the streaming giant censored its highly-anticipated Netflix roast, removing jokes about sensitive subjects like Lizzo’s weight, the #MeToo movement, and Hart's appearance at the Riyadh Comedy Festival. The allegations immediately drew criticism, with many viewers decrying what they perceived as the censorship of comedy.

Viewers dispute censorship claims from live Netflix broadcast

However, the censorship allegations were quickly met with a different story from those who watched the event live. A significant number of viewers who tuned into The Roast of Kevin Hart insisted that jokes about the supposedly forbidden topics were, in fact, part of the live broadcast.

This sentiment was echoed across social media by others who watched the finale of the Netflix Is a Joke Fest, leading to a wave of online confusion.

The mystery surrounding the Netflix roast was soon clarified by reports from the show's production team. It appears the so-called "cut" jokes were never edited out of the final broadcast because they never made it into the script presented on the teleprompter.

As one source clarified, these lines were not removed from the video after it aired live but were cut from the script before the roast began. Information confirmed that while controversial topics were covered during the show, certain specific gags were left on the cutting room floor during pre-production.

A question of taste: The controversy over which jokes remained

This debate over the Kevin Hart roast highlighted the fine line these comedy events walk. Viewers pointed out the irony that while some jokes were removed from the script, other arguably more controversial ones, including a joke about George Floyd, did make the final broadcast.

One observer noted that they "left in the unfunny joke about George Floyd." This selective process has left many questioning the logic behind which jokes are deemed acceptable for a modern Netflix roast and the standards for comedy on the platform.
