David Bowie’s daughter Lexi Jones wants to be recognised for her own identity
The singer said she wants to be recognised for her own identity and creative work
Lexi Jones has opened up about the emotional weight of constantly being identified as the daughter of late music icon David Bowie, admitting that the comparison often leaves her feeling “minimised” as an individual.
The 25-year-old singer shared a candid message on Instagram Stories, where she reflected on how people frequently remind her of her famous lineage in an attempt to comfort or encourage her.
While acknowledging that the comments usually come from a positive place, Jones said they can still feel emotionally complicated.
“It’s a very weird feeling when people try to comfort me and say, ‘Don’t forget who you are, you’re David Bowie’s daughter,’” she wrote.
“I’d rather be reminded of who I am than who I’m related to.”
Jones explained that hearing those remarks repeatedly can make her feel as though her own identity and ambitions are overshadowed by her father’s legendary status.
“Who I am is not based on him,” she continued, adding that the comments can unintentionally make her feel as though she is being recognised “as someone else before being reminded of myself.”
The singer, whose full name is Alexandria Jones, has spoken before about the challenges of carving out her own artistic identity while growing up under the shadow of one of music’s most influential figures.
In April 2025, she responded directly to criticism surrounding her debut album Xandri by posting a poem titled DAVID BOWIE’S DAUGHTER on social media.
In the piece, Jones pushed back against comparisons to her father and rejected expectations that she should replicate his success or artistic legacy.
“I’m not a copy, not a shadow,” she wrote. “I’m just trying to find my own peace.”
Jones also admitted that online criticism and constant comparisons have at times left her feeling discouraged, but she remains committed to pursuing music on her own terms.
The daughter of Bowie and supermodel Iman, Jones said she is focused on building her own creative path rather than living up to public expectations attached to her family name.
Despite the pressures that come with her background, she appears determined to establish an identity defined by her own voice, artistry and experiences.
