Elon Musk has sparked criticism online after describing Instagram as “for girls,” prompting a broader debate about gender stereotypes and social media habits.

The controversy began when Musk responded to a viral discussion about how people’s use of social media platforms can reflect different stages of life. In the thread, users joked about posting habits such as sharing curated photos, frequent stories and highly polished content. Musk joined the conversation by stating that Instagram is primarily a platform for girls.

In a follow-up comment, Musk said he found it unusual when adult men shared their Instagram profiles with him, suggesting that such behavior was out of character. The remark was widely interpreted by critics as dismissive and rooted in outdated gender assumptions.

Social media users quickly challenged the comment, noting that Instagram’s user base is split relatively evenly between men and women. Others argued that statements like Musk’s can reinforce stereotypes, especially when they come from one of the world’s most influential technology executives.

Several users questioned why a business leader overseeing major companies such as Tesla, SpaceX and X Corp. would make casual remarks that appear to belittle how people use other social media platforms.

At the same time, some users responded with humor, contrasting the culture of Instagram with that of X.

They described X as a fast-paced platform centered on breaking news and debate, while portraying Instagram as a more visual and lifestyle-oriented space.

The episode has also reignited discussion about Musk’s long-running rivalry with Mark Zuckerberg, whose company Meta Platforms owns Instagram.

Musk has repeatedly positioned X as a free-speech-focused alternative to Meta’s platforms. His latest comments have added to ongoing conversations about online identity, platform culture and the influence of high-profile figures on public discourse.
