OpenAI is looking for assistance in reversing the American public's negative perception of data centers.

Over the weekend, the leading AI firm advertised a new job opportunity for a role dubbed "community engagement lead." Employees in this position would engage with locals in areas where it intends to establish Stargate data centers.

One indicator of success, according to the announcement, would be "reduced friction."

Tech giants are investing hugely in data center construction to support their offerings. However, local residents frequently express concerns, fearing these data hubs might deplete water resources, elevate power costs, create noise, and generally interfere with their quality of life.

AI companies assert they can address some of these challenges by implementing innovative cooling solutions and covering their power expenses. They also claim that these projects could provide numerous jobs in local areas, though many of these are related to construction and therefore temporary.

Nationally, protests are on the rise as communities express resistance. Notable business figures, like Shark Tank investor Kevin O'Leary, supporting a data center project in Utah, have met with strong resistance.

For AI firms, constructing data centers is nearly a fundamental necessity, given that their continuously evolving chatbots and agents demand ever-growing data volumes to function properly. Companies like Elon Musk's SpaceX are even considering building them in outer space.

The Stargate initiative, a collaboration between OpenAI, Oracle, SoftBank, and MGX, was announced by President Donald Trump following the start of his second term. The coalition has earmarked $500 billion towards AI infrastructure across the nation.

Currently, Stargate data centers are set to be built in Texas, Michigan, New Mexico, Wisconsin, and Ohio.

OpenAI, in its job listing for the community engagement lead, states that securing local support for these data centers is "mission-critical."

"This position ensures that communities grasp what we are constructing, its significance, and how they can benefit substantially from it," the company explained.

OpenAI mentioned that candidates must either reside in or be willing to relocate to the regions where OpenAI is setting up data centers. The role offers between $129,600 and $236,000, including equity.

"The Community Engagement Lead will actively foster dialogue, identify concerns before they escalate, and incorporate community needs into the planning, communication, and execution of projects," it stated.
