A tragic crash in Oakland, California, left three people dead and five others injured after a teenage driver struck a group of pedestrians at high speed late Saturday night, authorities said.

The incident occurred shortly before 11:15 p.m. on May 16 at the intersection of 85th Avenue and International Boulevard, according to the Oakland Fire Department, which described the scene as involving a vehicle that “struck cars and pedestrians.”

Officials said three victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while three others were transported to local hospitals. Two of those victims were listed in critical condition, and one in serious condition.

Two additional individuals were also impacted in the crash, including the suspected driver, who sustained minor injuries.

Authorities confirmed to the Los Angeles Times that the driver was a juvenile. The teen was taken to the hospital and subsequently arrested.

Police said it remains unclear whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision.

In a statement, officials said the vehicle was allegedly traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on 85th Avenue before turning westbound onto International Boulevard, where it struck a parked car and multiple pedestrians.

Witnesses at the scene reportedly detained the suspect after the crash, preventing them from fleeing until Oakland police arrived, according to local reports.

The identities of the three deceased victims have not yet been released.

The Oakland Fire Department urged residents to avoid the area following the incident, as emergency crews continued work at the scene into Sunday morning.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash remains ongoing.
