Andrey Zvyagintsev is returning to the Cannes Film Festival for the first time in nearly a decade with his new film Minotaur, while making clear he has no plans to live in Russia again.

The acclaimed filmmaker, whose previous works Leviathan and Loveless earned two Academy Awards nominations, told Variety that he chose to remain in Paris after recovering from a life-threatening illness caused by COVID-19.

Zvyagintsev spent nearly a year in a German clinic, including 40 days in a medically induced coma. After leaving treatment, he relocated to France, where he has lived for almost four years.

“I have no desire, interest or intention to live in a nation embroiled in conflict with its neighbours,” he said.

The director said he does not foresee returning to Russia, explaining that preserving his freedom has become more important than remaining in his homeland.

His new film, Minotaur, was shot in Latvia because filming in Russia was not possible. The drama centers on a wealthy Russian businessman whose life unravels amid professional setbacks, global turmoil and an extramarital affair.

Set in September 2022, the film reflects the social divisions that emerged in Russia following the announcement of a military draft.

Despite living abroad, Zvyagintsev said his focus remains on universal human themes rather than any single country.

“My films are about human beings at the core,” he said. “These themes remain relevant regardless of the country.”

The filmmaker also said his near-death experience changed his outlook on life, making him feel bolder and more determined to pursue ambitious projects.

“Time is fleeting,” he said. “I learned the importance of bravery.”

Minotaur is competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
