Low-budget horror ‘Obsession’ eyes $100M milestone after strong opening
Despite a modest $750,000 budget, the film is competing with major studio releases
The newly released supernatural horror film Obsession is outperforming expectations at the box office, marking an impressive return for low-budget genre cinema.
Released on May 15 under Blumhouse Productions and Focus Features, the film opened with $17.1 million domestically in its debut weekend.
Industry tracking now suggests it could reach nearly $40 million by the end of its current weekend run, according to Box Office Explosion.
The momentum places Obsession among the strongest recent horror performers, especially considering its reported production budget of just $750,000.
If current projections hold, the film could also be on track to cross the $100 million global earnings milestone, a rare feat for a micro-budget release.
At the domestic chart, the film is currently trailing only major titles such as Michael and The Devil Wears Prada 2, underscoring its breakout performance against significantly larger studio competitors.
Directed by Curry Barker, Obsession follows a music store employee named Bear, played by Michael Johnston, who acquires a supernatural toy that grants his wish for his childhood friend Nikki, portrayed by Inde Navarrette, to fall in love with himtriggering a disturbing chain of consequences.
The cast also includes Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter, rounding out the ensemble.
Critically, the film has also found success, currently holding a 95 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes across both audience and critic reviews.
