Ferrari's first EV Luce is here — designed by Jony Ive and Mark Newson
Ferrari's first electric car has arrived, with 1,035 horsepower and a landmark collaborative design
After months of incremental previews, Ferrari has now given the world its first complete look at the Luce — the Italian marque's inaugural electric vehicle.
The Luce is significant on several fronts: it is Ferrari's first EV, its second four-door model, and its first car designed to seat five passengers.
A design collaboration with LoveFrom
What makes the Luce especially remarkable is the extent of the creative partnership behind it. Jony Ive and Mark Newson, working through their design collective LoveFrom, were not simply brought in to refine the cabin.
Ferrari has confirmed that LoveFrom was given the latitude to "define the design direction of the project from the outset," shaping both the exterior and interior.
The pair's work on the car's interiors had already been previewed earlier this year, but this marks the first time the full vehicle has been presented publicly.
First impressions: more SUV than sports car
Tim Stevens, reporting for Engadget, was among the first to see the Luce in person and described it as feeling more akin to an SUV than a conventional sports car.
He was not granted access to fully operational interior controls, nor was a test drive available, but the hardware on paper is considerable: four motors producing a combined 1,035 horsepower suggest the car is well-positioned to live up to the Ferrari name.
Sound and price
One element Stevens singled out for praise was the Luce's acoustic character. Rather than relying on the fully synthesised engine sounds that have become common across many electric vehicles, the Luce picks up and amplifies actual vibrations generated by the rear motors — a detail that should appeal to Ferrari enthusiasts concerned about the sensory experience of an EV.
On pricing, no figure has yet been set for the US market. In Italy, however, the Luce will start at €550,000, positioning it as the most expensive Ferrari ever produced.
