The indie horror film Obsession has delivered an unexpected box office milestone, emerging as a rare success story for a mid-budget genre release and outperforming expectations in its opening stretch.

Produced by Blumhouse Productions and distributed in the United States by Focus Features, the film has not only recovered its production budget but has also continued to build momentum through strong word of mouth and audience engagement.

According to Slash Film, Curry Barker’s directorial project earned approximately $23.9 million over the weekend, including the extended holiday period, marking a strong showing for a new independent horror title.

The film’s early performance has translated into broader commercial success, with Obsession reaching $58.5 million in North America and $74 million worldwide.

That places it behind major studio release The Mandalorian and Grogu at the global box office.

Industry observers noted a particularly unusual trend in the film’s trajectory: its weekend earnings reportedly increased by 39% compared to its opening frame.

That kind of growth is virtually unheard of for horror titles debuting on more than 2,000 screens, according to box office reporting cited by the outlet.

Analysts suggest the surge is being driven by strong social media buzz and positive audience reactions, with viewers highlighting the film’s unexpected emotional core alongside its horror elements.

The story follows a hopeless romantic named Bear, who makes a supernatural deal in an attempt to win the affection of his crush, Nikki, a premise that has resonated with younger audiences and fueled online discussion.

With continued interest and strong retention at the box office, Obsession is shaping up to be one of the most surprising breakout horror hits of the year.
