Louisiana jury convicts woman in five minutes for murder of boyfriend's four-year-old daughter
Athena Rose Denise Miller died from blunt force trauma after enduring repeated abuse in a dungeon-like bedroom
A Louisiana jury was reportedly moved to tears by graphic testimony and autopsy photographs before convicting a woman of murdering her boyfriend's four-year-old daughter, who prosecutors said died following repeated abuse inside what investigators described as a "dungeon-like" bedroom.
Terrie Ann Gray, 49, was found guilty after just five minutes of deliberation on charges of first-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to a juvenile in the death of Athena Rose Denise Miller, according to a press release issued by the Vernon Parish District Attorney's Office. Gray was also convicted on abuse allegations involving the child's two-year-old brother.
A child placed in danger within months of moving in
Authorities said Athena and her younger brother had moved into the Leesville home Gray shared with the children's father, Logan Miller, only months before Athena was discovered unresponsive.
The child was taken to a local hospital before being airlifted to a trauma facility in Shreveport, where she died the following day. A forensic medical examiner determined that Athena died from blunt force trauma to the head.
Graphic evidence reduces jurors to tears
During the deeply distressing trial, jurors were shown photographs documenting Athena's injuries, including burns, cuts, bruises, and broken bones, as KPLC and American Press reported.
Both outlets noted that some jurors and family members wept as testimony laid bare the full extent of the child's suffering.
Forensic pathologist Dr Barbara Herfel testified that Athena had endured "multiple events of trauma," including a bilateral brain bleed, fractures, burns, and an untreated broken clavicle, according to testimony cited by KPLC and American Press.
Gray's own daughter takes the stand
Gray's teenage daughter, Scarlett, testified that she had personally witnessed abuse inflicted upon Athena and her younger brother whilst the children lived in the home.
Scarlett told the jury she had once observed Gray standing behind Athena with the child's arms "pulled straight backwards" whilst bruises covered her small body, according to American Press.
"Over time, I saw the scratches on her body, and I saw the marks under her neck getting worse," Scarlett testified, as reported by the outlet.
She further told the court that she later discovered Athena unconscious and limp shortly after Gray had exited the child's bedroom and left the house, according to courtroom coverage from KPLC and American Press.
Sentencing and a second trial ahead
Gray is scheduled to be sentenced on 25 August. Under Louisiana law, a first-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole or probation, prosecutors confirmed.
Logan Miller, 26, faces separate charges in connection with Athena's death. His trial is scheduled to commence on 19 October, according to the district attorney's office.
