Almost a year after it was first announced, Instagram has confirmed that users can now rearrange the posts on their profile grids. The feature had previously been accessible to select users within test groups, but from 8 June it has begun a broad rollout across both Android and iPhone mobile apps.

What the new feature allows

Previously, posts on an Instagram profile were fixed in chronological order, with the sole exception of up to three posts that could be pinned to the top.

With the new feature now live on eligible accounts, users can long-press any post and drag it to a new position in the grid, regardless of when it was originally shared. Posts that have been pinned will continue to appear at the top of the profile.

How the feature came about

Instagram chief Adam Mosseri first announced the change in January last year, offering an apology to users whose carefully arranged profile pages had been disrupted when the platform switched from square post thumbnails to taller, more vertically oriented ones. His post confirming the wider rollout carried a single word: "Finally."

The comment section, however, indicated that many users still have other long-standing requests they would like the platform to address — among them, the release of a native iPad app, which users have been awaiting even longer than the grid reorder feature.
