Gemma Collins' dad Alan is the secret force behind her £1.4 million financial comeback
Gemma once admitted her dad controls all her money and she must ask him to upgrade her car
- Gemma Collins banked profits of around £1.4 million last year through Gemma Collins Ltd.
- Her father Alan is credited as the gatekeeper to her fortune and her financial backbone.
- Gemma was disqualified as a company director in 2020 after missing VAT return deadlines repeatedly.
For years, Gemma Collins presented herself to the world as an unstoppable force — designer handbags, larger-than-life energy, and an empire to match. But behind the glamour, there was a period when that empire began to fall apart around her.
Remarkably, the GC pulled herself back from the edge and banked more than £1.4 million last year. Those close to her, however, say the achievement would have been near-impossible without the steady hand of one man: her father, Alan.
The man behind the GC
Sources close to Gemma say the true secret to the Romford-born star's success is her dad, who is widely regarded as the only person capable of keeping her grounded.
"People see Gemma as this unstoppable force of nature, but behind the scenes, Alan has always been her rock," one source tells us. "When things got difficult financially, he stepped in and took control. Gemma trusts him completely. There aren't many people she would hand that responsibility to."
Gemma has long been open about the arrangement, once confessing in an interview: "My dad controls all my money. Seriously, I have to ask him if I want to upgrade my car."
It is a striking admission from a woman who has amassed a reported £4 million fortune and can command up to £75,000 for a single sponsored Instagram post. Yet those who know the family say it perfectly captures the nature of their bond.
"Alan has always kept Gemma grounded," another source tells us. "She's the star, but he's the sensible head behind the scenes. When she gets excited about a new project, he's often the person asking the difficult questions."
A remarkable financial turnaround
The results speak for themselves. Accounts filed for her personal brand, Gemma Collins Ltd, show the company generated profits of approximately £1.4 million last year — a dramatic reversal of fortune for anyone who witnessed the turbulence of earlier years.
In 2017, Gemma Collins Boutique Ltd was placed into liquidation with debts of around £88,000 owed to creditors. Further difficulties followed in 2020 when she was disqualified from serving as a company director for three years after repeatedly failing to meet VAT return deadlines, with HMRC pursuing claims in excess of £71,000. A separate clothing business was subsequently dissolved, and her cosmetics venture, GemmaCollagen Ltd, closed within months of launching.
"There was a period where it felt like every business venture came with a headache," one insider tells us. "Gemma never stopped working, but there were definitely lessons learned. That's when Alan became more involved."
A businessman who puts family first
It is perhaps telling that Gemma's greatest champion is also a man who understands commerce. Alan built a successful career in the shipping industry and has long been considered one of the most influential figures in his daughter's life.
Fans caught a glimpse of their closeness on her various reality programmes, in which Alan regularly dispensed advice — not merely about money, but about life in its entirety. During one notably candid exchange about her turbulent relationship with James Argent, he told her: "You've just got to find some stability in your life when you find the right person. As much as we all like Arg, you've got to decide if he's the right person."
He added: "For my daughter, I want somebody who's top dollar."
Those close to the family say that outlook explains precisely why Gemma trusts him so completely.
"Alan isn't interested in celebrity," one source tells us. "He cares about Gemma being secure and looked after. That's always been his focus."
Health scares and a closer bond
Their relationship has deepened considerably in recent years. Gemma has spoken movingly about her father's severe battle with Covid in 2020, during which he spent weeks fighting for his life in intensive care. She has also supported both Alan and her mother Joan through a succession of serious health challenges, including Joan's breast cancer diagnosis and a frightening hospitalisation last year after she stopped breathing.
The experiences have drawn the family closer together than ever. Alan and Joan now live with Gemma in her £1.3 million Essex home, alongside her fiancé Rami.
"They live with me now. They've moved into my home, so we're like one big Irish family," Gemma has said previously.
Those around her suggest the arrangement is harmonious.
"Rami was absolutely fine with it," Gemma told The Sun previously. "He loves my parents. They get on really well. You've got to remember, Rami has been in my family for nearly 15 years."
What's next for Gemma
The warmth of that family unit coincides with what insiders believe could be one of the most significant chapters of Gemma's career. Later this year, she will return to television with a new Sky reality series, Four Weddings and a Baby, which follows her wedding plans with Rami and her hopes of starting a family.
"This show is incredibly important to Gemma because it's the most personal thing she's ever done," one insider tells us. "People know The GC, but this is about the woman behind the character. She's genuinely in a really happy place."
For Gemma, that happiness feels hard-won. And for those who know her best, the latest financial milestone represents far more than a healthy set of accounts — it is proof that after years of setbacks, she has found the stability she spent so long chasing. Standing beside her through it all has been the same man from the very beginning.
