OpenAI unveils plan to deliver personal AGI to every person on Earth by 2028
OpenAI published a blog post on 8 June outlining three core goals for the future of AI
In a technology landscape shaped increasingly by artificial intelligence, the concept of Artificial General Intelligence — or AGI — represents the next transformative frontier. OpenAI has now made clear that it intends to pursue that frontier not for a privileged few, but for every person on the planet.
The company envisions a future in which advanced AI is affordable, abundant, and widely distributed — a tool capable of empowering every individual, regardless of where they live.
Three core goals
In a blog post published on 8 June, OpenAI set out its ambitions in detail, declaring its determination to bring "personal AGI to everyone on Earth."
The company outlined three primary objectives it is currently focused on. The first centres on the development of an automated AI researcher — a system capable of conducting scientific research under human supervision.
OpenAI aims for a significant proportion of such research to be carried out by AI systems by March 2028, a milestone it believes will help humanity navigate the transition into a post-AGI world.
The second goal focuses on economic advancement through scientific progress, productivity growth, and the equitable distribution of the resulting gains.
The third and most expansive goal is to place a personal AGI in the hands of every person on Earth, giving each individual the freedom to use it as they see fit.
Three phases toward AGI
OpenAI described the path to achieving this vision in three distinct phases. The first phase involves conducting foundational research towards achieving AGI. The second concentrates on translating that research into real-world relevance and practical application.
The third phase — which OpenAI says is now underway — centres on the reshaping of the global economy around AI.
"Now we are entering the third phase. The economy is beginning to reshape around AI. The central question now is how to make advanced AI abundant, affordable, safe, useful, and easy enough for every person and organization to benefit from it. Frontier capability is only part of the job. The bigger task is turning that capability into tools people can actually use to thrive," the blogpost read.
The company also set out the broader significance of achieving these goals.
"If we get this right, AI can become a foundation for greater productivity, creativity, scientific progress, and economic opportunity for the many, and we will achieve our mission: to ensure AGI benefits all of humanity."
IPO filing on the same day
The announcement coincided with news that OpenAI had filed a confidential S-1 document in connection with a potential initial public offering — a significant development for the company as it moves deeper into its third phase of development.
