Princess Kate breaks wedding outfit tradition at Peter Phillips' Gloucestershire ceremony
Kate wore a new outfit to Peter Phillips' wedding, departing from her usual style custom
Princess Kate departed from her well-established wedding guest tradition on 6 June, arriving at All Saints Church in Kemble, Gloucestershire, in a brand-new outfit for the marriage of Peter Phillips and Harriet Sperling.
The departure from her custom drew attention, as Kate has for years made a point of rewearing familiar pieces to weddings — a quiet, deliberate choice to keep the focus firmly on the couple rather than her own wardrobe.
A new dress for a special occasion
Kate arrived in a cream bouclé midi dress by Roland Mouret, featuring a distinctive collar, front buttons, a cinched waist and a pleated skirt. The piece appeared to be a recent acquisition, setting it apart from her typical approach to wedding dressing.
Among her most notable reused ensembles, she wore her trusted Alexander McQueen coat dress to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's 2018 wedding, and appeared in a blush Elie Saab ensemble at Crown Prince Hussein's nuptials to Princess Rajwa in 2023 — a gown she had originally worn to her sister Pippa Middleton's wedding.
Shoes worn for over a decade
Kate completed her look with heels that carry their own story. Shoe label Rupert Sanderson confirmed her choice on Instagram, writing: "HRH The Princess of Wales, seen wearing our iconic Malory pumps last week, having owned this precise pair for over a decade."
The brand added: "It's what brings pride to Rupert Sanderson as a shoemaker to craft something flawlessly elegant that lasts, both in its workmanship and style. The Malory pump remains available as both a stocked and custom-made choice – a classic design, ideal for weddings and special occasions."
Accessories with personal meaning
Kate carried a woven clutch from Australian label Forever New, a piece she has reached for on numerous previous occasions. Her earrings — blush gemstone drops by Kiki McDonough, one of her favourite jewellers — have appeared before, most notably at Pippa Middleton's 2017 wedding and again at the Earthshot Prize Awards in 2021.
A tribute to Princess Diana
The most poignant element of the ensemble was a pearl bracelet once belonging to Princess Diana, which Kate wore on her wrist as a quiet tribute to her late mother-in-law. The three-strand piece was designed by Nigel Milne as part of a charitable initiative supporting Birthright, a women's health organisation that Diana endorsed during her lifetime.
Royals gather in Gloucestershire
Kate was among a significant gathering of the royal family at the intimate Gloucestershire ceremony. King Charles, Queen Camilla, Princess Anne, and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence all attended to celebrate the wedding of Princess Anne's son, Peter Phillips.
Prince William was also present, as were Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, Princess Eugenie alongside her husband Jack Brooksbank, and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.
