The German container ship Posen docked in Los Angeles on 10 June, carrying what are almost certainly the first mass production units of the Steam Frame, Valve's new gaming VR headset, following a two-week voyage from Shanghai. The arrival was flagged by Valve watcher Brad Lynch, who noted the shipment's likely contents based on import data. Import records confirm that Valve's distribution partner Ceva offloaded nearly 32 metric tons of goods categorised as "Virtual Reality Devices" on Valve's behalf — equating to roughly 13 metric tons of actual product once the combined weight of five 40-foot shipping containers is subtracted.

Estimating unit numbers

Thirteen metric tons is not a large volume for a consumer electronics launch, though the compact size of VR headsets may allow more units per container than bulkier hardware. Each Steam Frame weighs 654 grams — approximately 1.44 pounds — including a pair of wand controllers, and back-of-envelope calculations suggest the current US stock likely amounts to fewer than 20,000 units at this stage.

Steam Machine stockpile also growing

The same import methodology was previously used to estimate that Valve imported 50 tons of game consoles over two days last month. Because Valve explicitly distinguishes between "Game Consoles" and "Virtual Reality Devices" in its import filings, analysts can now say with greater confidence that the earlier stockpile consisted of Steam Machine consoles.

Total "Game Consoles" product arriving in 12,600-kilogram containers since 23 April now stands at approximately 141 metric tons, suggesting Valve's Steam Machine inventory in the US may be approaching that figure. At the console's estimated weight of 2.6 kilograms per unit — excluding controllers and cables — 141 metric tons could still represent fewer than 50,000 units.

Steam Deck shipments also detected

Import records also point to three separate Steam Deck handheld shipments arriving in May — two on 18 May and one on 30 May. Those containers carried a higher gross weight of 14,500 kilograms, which aligns with the typical weight of Valve's "Game Console" containers recorded prior to the Steam Machine announcement.

Summer launch confirmed amid pricing uncertainty

Valve confirmed days ago that both the Steam Machine and Steam Frame will launch this summer. The company has also signalled that pricing may be higher than originally anticipated, citing the impact of RAMageddon — the ongoing RAM shortage that has pushed up memory costs across the consumer electronics industry. Despite the potential for elevated price points, demand is expected to be strong, and early sell-outs remain a distinct possibility.
