Royal experts compare Kate Middleton and Princess Diana ahead of future queen role
Experts say Kate was already transforming the monarchy before her cancer diagnosis in 2024
Princess of Wales Kate Middleton has drawn comparisons to the late Princess Diana since the moment she entered the royal family, and two royal experts say those parallels were always unavoidable.
Royal author Christopher Andersen told Fox News Digital that Kate's influence on the British monarchy already rivals — and in some respects surpasses — that of her late mother-in-law. A second expert has described Kate as the country's future queen in waiting, praising her warmth and public presence.
The 'Kate Era' begins
Andersen was unequivocal in his assessment of Kate's significance to the institution. "I think the 'Kate Era' began the moment she and Prince William exchanged vows in 2011," he said. "No one in recent memory has had a greater impact on the monarchy than Kate."
He added that her influence was already being felt before a major health setback intervened: "Kate was already bringing her own special brand of magic to the monarchy before she was sidetracked by her stunning cancer diagnosis in 2024."
The Diana comparison
Andersen argued that the comparisons between Kate and Diana were built into their shared qualities from the outset. "From the beginning, comparisons with Princess Diana were inevitable — both were charismatic, compassionate, beautiful, smart, stylish and, most importantly, they could connect with people on a very human level," he said.
However, he identified one crucial distinction in Kate's favour, noting that "Kate has one thing that Diana didn't have: a husband who truly loves and supports her." Andersen also pointed to their contrasting upbringings as a defining difference: "Diana also had a terrible childhood that left her emotionally fragile, in contrast to Kate, who had a solid family background and is trying to give her own children a normal childhood," he said.
'Our future queen'
Royal expert Ailsa Anderson offered a separate but equally glowing assessment of the Princess of Wales, speaking recently to People magazine. "She is our future queen," Anderson said. "As Queen Elizabeth used to say, you have to be seen to be believed. She is glamorous, she is beautiful. She is warm and approachable."
