David Knezevich disposed of estranged wife’s body on road trip, FBI alleges

Ana Maria Henao’s disappearance in Madrid in February 2024 has become a high-profile international murder case, with federal investigators alleging her estranged husband, David Knezevich, transported and disposed of her body during a multi-country road trip across Europe.

Henao, a 40-year-old Florida real estate investor, was last seen on surveillance footage entering her Madrid apartment on 2 February 2024 at approximately 1:42 p.m. She was reportedly in the midst of a contentious divorce from Knezevich, with whom she had built a real estate portfolio valued at more than $8 million across 15 properties, as per People.

About 30 minutes before she sent her final text message, CCTV captured a man wearing a motorcycle helmet entering the building and spray-painting over security cameras. Investigators later alleged the same individual left the property with a rolling suitcase believed to contain Henao’s remains.

Shortly after, a message sent from Henao’s phone told friends she had met a man and would be at his home with limited phone signal. Her friends alerted authorities when she stopped responding.

Investigators later traced Knezevich’s movements across multiple countries, including travel from Miami to Turkey, then onward to Serbia, where he rented a Peugeot vehicle. Prosecutors alleged he then drove a route spanning France, Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, during which they believe he disposed of Henao’s body.

Federal prosecutor Lacee Monk told a 2024 hearing that Knezevich targeted Henao amid financial conflict, alleging he acted to prevent her from receiving an equal share of their jointly built assets.

The couple’s financial disputes had intensified in late 2023, when Henao’s brother alleged Knezevich and his legal team systematically diverted around $6 million in equity through disputed transactions. One property sale worth $900,000 reportedly closed on the morning of her disappearance, though the proceeds were never received by Henao or her family, according to civil filings.

Knezevich was arrested in May 2024 on federal charges including kidnapping resulting in death and foreign murder of a U.S. national. He pleaded not guilty but died by suicide in April 2025 while awaiting trial at the Federal Detention Center in Miami.

Authorities believe Henao is deceased, though her body has never been recovered. The FBI is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to her remains.
