Authorities have revealed the cause of death for Jamey Carney, the American mother who was found dead inside her Ireland home earlier this month.

State Pathologist Dr Linda Mulligan determined that Carney, 43, died by suffocation, according to The Irish Times.

Carney was found dead at her home in Killarney, Ireland, on July 7. Gardaí, Ireland’s national police service, confirmed that officers responded to the property, where she was pronounced dead.

The New York native had moved to Ireland with her 13-year-old daughter in 2021. Authorities and family members said Carney was discovered by a relative.

Police have released limited information about the ongoing homicide investigation, but have confirmed they are seeking to speak with a man who has since left Ireland.

The man has been described as a person of interest who was known to Carney, according to reports from BBC News and Irish broadcaster RTÉ. Authorities have not released further details about his identity.

Following Carney’s death, her family launched a fundraising campaign to help cover memorial expenses and provide support during the difficult time.

“Jamey was an insanely caring human being, who dedicated so much of herself, her energy, and her time, to fighting for the rights of others,” her family wrote in the fundraiser.

They added that they are working with local authorities and hope Carney’s daughter can remain in Ireland, “especially while grieving this tragic loss.”

Another fundraising campaign was also created by Carney’s friends and former high school classmates to support her loved ones.

Police have urged anyone with information about the case, including anyone with surveillance footage from the area, to come forward as the investigation continues.
