Elon Musk clashes with journalist over public popularity

Elon Musk pushed back against criticism of his public image, arguing that journalists and the media are more unpopular than he is during a wide-ranging interview with The Economist.

The X owner made the remarks after being asked whether he understood why some people "loathe" him and view his politics and social media activity as harmful to Western democracy.

Musk rejects claim people dislike him more

Speaking with The Economist editor-in-chief Zanny Minton Beddoes, Musk acknowledged that some people may dislike him but insisted he enjoys broader public support.

"Maybe some people do loathe me — and that's probably true — I don't care."

He pointed to his large social media following, saying it reflects that "a lot more people actually like me than don't."

Musk then turned his criticism toward the media, claiming journalists are viewed far more negatively by the public.

"I think a lot more people hate you and the media more than you realize."

Journalist cites declining trust in news

Beddoes agreed that trust in journalism has declined, acknowledging that mistakes by news organisations have contributed to the problem.

However, she argued that the increasingly polarised environment on social media, including activity on X, has also fuelled public distrust.

Musk rejected that argument, insisting the media itself is responsible for its reputation.

"I think you're the problem, the media."

When Beddoes noted that she was far less publicly known than Musk, he clarified that he was referring to the media collectively rather than individual journalists.

Musk remains a polarising public figure

The interview comes as Musk continues to face scrutiny over his political views, business decisions and public statements.

Recent polling has shown mixed public opinion toward the billionaire, who has remained a frequent subject of debate over his role in politics, ownership of X and leadership of several technology companies.
