Robert Pattinson compares The Odyssey role to Jacob in 'Twilight'

Robert Pattinson has playfully revived the long-running Team Edward versus Team Jacob debate, joking that his latest role in The Odyssey reminds him of Taylor Lautner's character from the Twilight franchise.

Speaking to MTV U.K. at the London premiere of Christopher Nolan's epic film, Pattinson reflected on playing Antinous, one of the arrogant suitors competing for Queen Penelope's affection while her husband, Odysseus, is believed to be lost.

When asked what it was like portraying a character audiences are not expected to support, Pattinson quipped, “It's kind of like Jacob in Twilight.”

The actor famously played vampire Edward Cullen in the blockbuster Twilight film series opposite Kristen Stewart, whose character Bella Swan found herself torn between Edward and werewolf Jacob Black, played by Taylor Lautner.

The love triangle became one of pop culture's biggest rivalries, dividing fans into Team Edward and Team Jacob throughout the five-film franchise released between 2008 and 2012.

Drawing another comparison between the two stories, Pattinson joked that The Odyssey follows a similar romantic dilemma.

“What The Odyssey is about — Penelope just can't make her mind up between the two guys, and I'm just trying to help her make a decision,” he said with a laugh.

He then added, “It's like, it's fine. He's dead, get over it,” referring to the assumption that Odysseus would never return home.

In Christopher Nolan's adaptation of Homer's classic poem, Pattinson stars as Antinous alongside Anne Hathaway, who plays Queen Penelope, and Matt Damon as Odysseus. 

The star-studded cast also includes Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron and John Leguizamo.

Pattinson recently admitted he enjoys taking on villainous or morally complex characters.

“I like lowering people's expectations,” he previously said. “Undersell and overdeliver, that's my motto.”

The Odyssey is now playing in theaters, while the Twilight films remain available to stream.
