Christopher Nolan recounts how Cillian Murphy ended up playing scarecrow in ‘Batman Begins’
Christopher Nolan played a unique trick to get Cillian Murphy a major role in ‘Batman’

Prior to the release of Oppenheimer, the director on the film Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy talked about the latter’s audition for Batman Begins.
During his conversation with EW, Murphy detailed how he was persuaded by Nolan to audition for the role of Batman in the Dark Knight trilogy, so he could convince the execs to cast Murphy as scarecrow instead.
"It was clear to me from the beginning that I wasn't Batman material," Murphy told the outlet. "It felt to me that it was correct and right that it should be Christian Bale for that part."
"But I remember the buzz of trying on the suit and being directed by you," Murphy said to Nolan, who was also present with him during the interview.
"Those tests were high production values," he added.
To which the director agreed saying, "When we had our first conversation I think both of us knew that you weren't going to wind up playing Batman.”
He further added, “but I really wanted to get on set with you, I wanted to get you on film."
Cillian Murphy is playing the role of nuclear physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, in the upcoming biopic, the movie is slated for a July 21, 2023 release.
