Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan clarifies the truth behind Kevin Costner's sudden departure

Taylor Sheridan reveals Kevin Costner stayed on Yellowstone much longer than originally planned

By GH Web Desk

Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan is setting the record straight about Kevin Costner's high-profile departure from the hit Paramount series. Speaking on a recent podcast, Sheridan revealed that Costner’s original contract only committed him to the first three seasons, after which his character’s youngest son was meant to take over. However, because the network feared losing their biggest star, Costner agreed to stay on for an additional two seasons despite being ready to move on to other projects.

While rumors suggested a behind-the-scenes falling out led to John Dutton being killed off in the final season, Sheridan explains it was simply a matter of the actor wanting to shift his focus. Costner ultimately decided it was time to pursue his own passions, which included writing, producing, and directing his multi-part Western film project, Horizon: An American Saga.
