Elon Musk made big promises for Tesla’s Robotaxi in 2025

Elon Musk set ambitious expectations for Tesla’s Robotaxi programme in 2025, predicting fully autonomous public rides, rapid geographic expansion, and service reaching half of the US population by year’s end.

As 2025 comes to a close, the reality looks otherwise. At the start of the year, Musk said Robotaxi would deliver paid autonomous rides by June, expand to up to 10 metro areas, deploy hundreds of vehicles, cover half the US, and introduce fully unsupervised driving for personal Teslas.

While progress has been made, many of those targets remain unmet as the year ends.

However, missed deadlines are nothing new for Musk, a pattern often referred to as “Elon Time.”

The Tesla CEO has openly acknowledged his overly optimistic timelines, once saying he is “pathologically optimistic with time.”

Despite this, investors and analysts have largely tolerated the delays, provided Tesla continues to make steady progress.

“I listen to the long-term vision and then focus on the milestones needed to get there,” said Seth Goldstein, an analyst at Morningstar, in earlier comments.

In the final days of 2025, Tesla employees shared videos on X (formerly Twitter) showing what appeared to be fully autonomous drives in Austin without an in-car safety monitor.

Musk also claimed he personally tested the system and described the experience as “perfect driving.”
