Jessie Buckley reacts to her best actress Oscar nod for ‘Hamnet’
The 'Judy' actress says she’s proud her film has resonated with audiences
Jessie Buckley opened up about her Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her role in Hamnet, saying she felt “so proud and honoured.”
The 36-year-old actress has been shortlisted for portraying Agatha Shakespeare, joining fellow nominees Rose Byrne, Kate Hudson, Renate Reinsve and Emma Stone.
While speaking in a phone interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Buckley said she was “thrilled” despite the chaos of family life unfolding around her.
She added that she felt honoured to stand alongside “extraordinary women” and to see Hamnet recognised on such a major stage.
The film has picked up eight nominations in total, including Best Picture and Best Director for Chloe Zhao.
However, Paul Mescal was notably snubbed in the Best Supporting Actor category, a decision Buckley addressed directly.
She said her own nomination “belonged” just as much to Mescal, crediting him as essential to her performance.
Buckley explained that there was “no part” of her character that existed without what Mescal brought to the film.
She added that their creative partnership was something she would hold “dearly” for life.
Reflecting on the production, Buckley described the Hamnet cast and crew as a “family”.
She said making the film felt like being part of a small village and called it one of the greatest privileges of her career.
Buckley added that she felt proud that the film had resonated with audiences, noting that was ultimately who the story was made for.
