Elon Musk announces FSD subscription price hike as Tesla ends Autopilot

Elon Musk has confirmed that Tesla plans to raise the monthly subscription price of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software as new features and capabilities are introduced.

The announcement comes as the company prepares to phase out its long-standing Autopilot branding in the United States.

In a post shared early Friday on X (formerly Twitter), Musk said the current $99-per-month price for supervised FSD will not remain static.

He noted that the cost will rise in line with improvements to the system’s performance and functionality.

According to Musk, the most transformative milestone will arrive when FSD no longer requires constant driver supervision, allowing occupants to use their phones or rest during trips.

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving software is classified as an advanced driver assistance system rather than a fully autonomous solution.

It currently requires drivers to remain attentive and ready to take control at all times. In addition to the subscription option, Tesla has offered customers the ability to purchase FSD outright for a one-time fee of $8,000.

However, the company has announced that this purchase option will be discontinued beginning February 14, leaving the subscription model as the primary way to access the software.

Musk’s comments were made in response to discussion surrounding Tesla’s decision to end its Autopilot service in the US market. Autopilot previously included features such as Traffic-Aware Cruise Control and lane-keeping assistance.
