Michael B. Jordan wins first Oscar in surprise victory over Timothée Chalamet
Jordan earned the honour for his performance in the film 'Sinners'
Michael B. Jordan delivered one of the biggest surprises of the 98th Academy Awards after winning his first-ever Oscar for Best Actor, beating pre-ceremony favourite Timothée Chalamet.
Jordan, 39, earned the honour for his performance in the film Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler, in which he portrayed identical twins in the acclaimed horror drama.
As his name was announced at the ceremony held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, the audience erupted into applause while the actor appeared visibly stunned by the victory.
Taking the stage, Jordan began his speech with gratitude toward his family, repeating, “God is good,” as he acknowledged his mother and relatives attending the event.
The actor also thanked longtime collaborator Coogler, praising the filmmaker for believing in him and giving him the opportunity to grow as an artist.
Jordan further recognised his co-stars including Wunmi Mosaku, Miles Caton, Delroy Lindo, Jayme Lawson, Li Jun Li and Hailee Steinfeld.
Reflecting on Hollywood’s history, Jordan paid tribute to past Black Best Actor winners including Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker and Will Smith, while also honouring Halle Berry, the first Black woman to win Best Actress.
Jordan’s Oscar win caps a strong awards season that included nominations at the BAFTA Awards, Golden Globe Awards and Critics' Choice Awards, along with a victory at the Screen Actors Guild Awards earlier this month.
