WhatsApp introduces 'Guest Chats' to allow messaging without an account
WhatsApp’s 'Guest Chats' aim to capture new users through secure links
WhatsApp has commenced testing a significant new feature titled 'Guest Chats', which permits individuals to engage with the platform without the necessity of creating an account or installing the application.
As of March 2026, the update is being rolled out to a select group of beta testers on both Android and iOS.
This development allows guests to join conversations through secure links that function directly within WhatsApp Web via mobile or desktop browsers.
The process involves a registered user generating a link through an 'Invite a friend' option, which is then shared via traditional communication channels. Upon clicking the link, the recipient can select the option to “Continue as guest.”
To maintain transparency within the interface, guests are required to provide a display name, and their profile is clearly identified with a “Guest” tag for the primary user.
Security remains a priority during these interactions. Each session generates a unique identifier to establish an encryption key, ensuring that all correspondence remains private.
While guests can view the telephone number of their inviter, the registered user retains the ability to block guests should the link be accessed by an unauthorised party.
Key limitations of WhatsApp guest chats
- No group chats
- No media sharing, including photos, videos, or stickers
- No voice or video calls
- Chats expire after 10 days of inactivity
This strategic move appears designed to attract new users by lowering the barriers to entry. While the feature remains in its testing phase, an official date for a global rollout is yet to be confirmed.
