Sony and Pop Mart announce 'Labubu' movie, Steven Levenson to co-write

Pop Mart and Sony Pictures Entertainment have officially announced their plans for a live-action Labubu film, inspired by the The Monsters universe.

As previously revealed, Paul King, known for Wonka and Paddington and multiple BAFTA nominations, will direct.

He is set to co-write the screenplay with Steven Levenson. This project is in its early stages, featuring a combination of live-action and CGI elements.

This announcement was made during the Paris leg of The Monsters global exhibition tour, marking their 10th anniversary.

Kasing Lung will be an executive producer, with King, Michael Schaefer (The Martian), and Wenxin She (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Wish Dragon) producing. Brittany Morrissey will manage the project for Sony Pictures.

Lung, originally from Hong Kong and raised in the Netherlands, introduced Labubu and The Monsters in a series of illustrated books titled The Monsters Trilogy back in 2015.

Levenson is a prominent screenwriter and playwright. His notable works include Dear Evan Hansen, which won him a Tony Award; tick tick… BOOM!, for which he was nominated for a WGA Award; and Fosse/Verdon, earning him an Emmy nomination.
