Hairstylist Ursula Stephen breaks down Zendaya’s chic and adaptable look
The 'Euphoria' star first debuted the look in February, showcasing effortless curls and style
Zendaya debuted a bold new ‘convertible cut’ that works with her natural curls and can be styled multiple ways.
The 'Euphoria' star cropped haircut in February, sparking attention for its unique, versatile shape.
Hairstylist Ursula Stephen, who crafted the look, told Hypebae that she refers to it as a “convertible cut.”
“It’s not actually a bob,” Stephen explained. “It’s almost like a dress you can wear many ways. Z wanted a cut that would work with her natural texture and also offer versatility. When it’s in its natural state, it doesn’t read as a bob—it kinda reads as a bixie.”
While fans speculated that the dramatic chop might be for an upcoming role, Stephen confirmed it was entirely Zendaya’s choice and one she plans to keep for the foreseeable future.
Zendaya first stepped out with the shorter style on February 18 in Los Angeles, wearing a casual oversized white jacket, T-shirt, and black wide-leg trousers, letting her natural curls shine.
The Emmy winner has long favored mid-length hairstyles, with her previous short look appearing at the 2025 Golden Globes.
Her “convertible cut” has already appeared on the red carpet. At the 2026 Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards on March 12, Zendaya styled textured curls to complement a white flower-adorned Eugene Alexander minidress.
She later appeared at the 2026 Oscars in a sleek variation of the style and showcased loose curly tendrils at the Los Angeles premiere of The Drama on March 17.
Stephen emphasized that the style was designed for flexibility, allowing Zendaya to easily transition from natural curls to sleek looks, keeping the actress’s signature elegance intact while embracing her natural texture.
