Cillian Murphy credits storytelling for 'Peaky Blinders' global success
The 'Oppenheimer' star calls the show’s popularity a result of powerful writing and devoted fans
Cillian Murphy has opened up about the enduring global appeal of Peaky Blinders, insisting the show’s success lies in its storytelling rather than his own performance.
The Irish actor, best known for his portrayal of Tommy Shelby, reflected on the series’ widespread popularity as he prepares to reprise the role in the upcoming Netflix film The Immortal Man.
The new project is set to introduce a shift in narrative, focusing on a younger generation led by Shelby’s on-screen son, played by Barry Keoghan.
Speaking about what made the show resonate worldwide, Murphy emphasized the power of long-form television.
He explained that the format allows creators to explore characters in greater depth, giving audiences time to connect with their complexities and emotional journeys.
“It allows you to really explore all the light and shade… all the different complexities that characters can have,” he said, noting that this level of character development is rarely achieved in films.
Murphy added that spending extended time with characters creates a deeper emotional investment for viewers, fostering a unique sense of connection and even ownership among fans.
Despite the show’s massive following and the cultural impact of Tommy Shelby, the actor dismissed the idea that his performance is the driving force behind its success. Instead, he credited the audience and the strength of the writing.
“It’s very humbling when it does [resonate], but I do think that’s the fans doing,” he said.
Peaky Blinders originally ran for six seasons before concluding in 2022, becoming a global phenomenon along the way. Its upcoming continuation, The Immortal Man, marks a new chapter for the franchise, expanding its legacy while introducing fresh faces and storylines.
