Boyan Chowdhury was struck with a wooden weapon during a daylight attack
Guitarist Boyan Chowdhury, 46, suffered a serious head injury requiring hospital treatment after being struck with a piece of wood in Liverpool.
The incident occurred in the Wavertree area shortly after 2pm on Saturday following an altercation with a group of males.
Merseyside Police confirmed that the musician was "racially abused" before the physical assault took place near Fieldway.
Mr Chowdhury later shared images of his injuries on social media, expressing the gravity of the encounter.
Reflecting on the terrifying moment, the former Zutons member wrote: “If I hadn’t of turned around I believe I would’ve been struck on the back of the head and dead right now.”
Detectives have launched a full investigation into the matter. Detective Inspector Debra Morley described the event as “abhorrent,” stating: “Violence and hate crime will simply never be tolerated in our communities.”
Authorities are now appealing for witnesses who may have seen the group or the incident to contact them.
Boyan Chowdhury was a prominent member of the rock band The Zutons, contributing to hit singles such as “Why Won’t You Give Me Your Love?” and the original version of “Valerie”.
Although he left the group in 2007, he remains a significant figure in the Merseyside music scene. While the current focus remains on his recovery and the ongoing police inquiry, the community has expressed widespread shock at the violence.
Officers continue to act upon every piece of information to ensure those responsible for this hate-fuelled assault are brought to justice.
