Taylor Dearden portrays Dr. Mel King as 'genuinely asexual' in 'The Pitt'
Fresh episodes of 'The Pitt' season 2 air Thursdays at 9pm ET on HBO Max
Taylor Dearden shares insights on what the future holds for Dr. Mel King's love life.
Dearden, the actress behind Mel on HBO's acclaimed medical series The Pitt, disclosed to Glamour that she remains somewhat unsure about her character's relationship dynamics and identity but remains receptive to whatever direction it may take.
"Honestly, I’m not certain... We need to remain flexible since we’re unsure where the writers intend to lead the plot," Dearden, aged 33, explained in an interview released on March 20. "My personal vision might differ from their plans."
She elaborated, "Personally, I've always visualized Mel as someone devoid of romantic inclinations — truly asexual — with friendship being her utmost priority.
Romantic elements like flirting are not part of her nature, but it’s also essential to align with the writers' vision to see which route they wish to explore."
Dearden remarked that this method "is how I’ve consistently portrayed Mel."
"I'm hopeful it’s flexible enough to allow shifts if necessary," she stated. "For Mel, everything revolves around connecting with others and maintaining genuine companionship, which I believe doesn't necessitate romance."
In another part of the discussion, Dearden explained why she considers herself one of the "least identified" performers from the show, revealing that her "hair often confuses people" as it appears darker in the series.
"I enjoy a greater degree of anonymity compared to others, as they bear striking resemblances to their on-screen selves, adorned in a glitzy manner," Dearden shared, mentioning that she occasionally isn’t even recognised by her castmates.
"Even on the set, as we await scene rehearsals, directing crew will comment, 'We’re waiting for Taylor,' and I’m already there," she revealed.
"The response is often, 'Oh wow. Yeah, apologies.' It's like, 'That's alright. We'll manage.' Whether this persists is uncertain, but I certainly have more leeway."
The Pitt features other talents like Noah Wyle, Patrick Ball and Katherine LaNasa, chronicling the lives of workers at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center over a 15-hour work period.
Dearden first appeared with the show's debut cast in the initial season of 2025, returning for its ongoing second season.
"Initially, we felt, 'We’re clueless about expectations or anything else,'" she remarked in January.
