Lee Byunghan, Han Jimin cast in Disney+'s Korean remake of FX's 'The Americans'
Lee Byunghun from 'Squid Game' and Han Jimin of 'Heavenly Ever After' will headline 'The Koreans'
Lee Byunghun (Squid Game) and Han Jimin (Heavenly Ever After) are set to star in The Koreans, a reimagined version of FX’s The Americans, on Disney+.
The series has commenced production and will be available exclusively on Disney+ worldwide and Hulu in the United States.
Set against the backdrop of South Korea's early 1990s democratisation and cultural evolution, The Koreans follows a seemingly typical middle-class family harboring a dangerous secret.
Although they appear as regular individuals in the eyes of friends, neighbors, and even their kids, the parents are actually top-level North Korean spies with a mission to destabilise the South from within.
The show explores the stark contrasts between the once-unified nations as the spies grapple with complex emotions of patriotism, loyalty, identity, and love, all while a relentless Korean counterintelligence agent inches closer to uncovering their true identities.
Byunghun and Jimin are set to portray the spies living undercover.
Produced by Imaginus and Studio AA, the series is directed by Ahn Gilho (The Glory) and written by Park Eunkyo (Made in Korea, Mother) as an adaptation of FX’s The Americans, which had a successful six-season run from 2013-18.
Created by Joe Weisberg and guided by Joel Fields and Weisberg, The Americans featured Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys, winning the Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Drama and being recognised as an AFI TV Program of the Year for five straight seasons.
The Koreans joins Disney+ APAC’s growing lineup of Korean originals, among them Tempest, Made in Korea, and The Tyrant.
