It may not wear a trench coat or need a rest pod, nor does it have stock options yet, but Agent Smith has arrived at the Googleplex.

Google team members are engaging with a new AI application known as "Agent Smith," capable of automating tasks like programming, according to three informed individuals.

It has garnered so much attention that usage had to be limited to accommodate the surge of employees utilising it, two sources noted.

Smith — possibly a nod to the villain from The Matrix — enhances Google's existing coding framework, Antigravity, and can collaborate with numerous internal systems.

It functions autonomously, without immediate computer intervention, letting employees direct it through mobile devices. Smith was introduced earlier this year, according to one source.

For certain developers, it's already offering substantial support during a period when the company is rapidly integrating AI to enhance efficiency.

Leaders within Google and the wider tech world view these agents as a breakthrough in productivity enhancement.

Sergey Brin, Google's cofounder, mentioned to Google employees during a recent town hall meeting that AI agents will have a significant impact at Google this year, according to an attendee.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is working on developing his own to aid in managing the company, The Wall Street Journal reported.

A Google representative informed Business Insider when questioned about Agent Smith and the broader AI objectives, "We're constantly exploring innovative approaches to crafting agents that address practical issues for individuals and businesses, but we don't have any specifics to disclose right now."

Although not the first of its kind, Smith is able to autonomously manage more workflow steps than earlier AI coding assistants, stated two Google workers familiar with its capabilities. With access to employee profiles, it can retrieve documents they would otherwise have to locate manually.

Moreover, another distinctive feature of Smith is its availability through Google's internal chat platform, reported by two employees.
