Mistral obtains $830m debt financing for AI data center

The French artificial intelligence (AI) company Mistral announced on Monday that it has secured $830 million through debt financing to establish a data center, leveraging thousands of Nvidia chips.

Established in 2023, Mistral is among the rare European startups working on foundational AI models, striving to rival giants like OpenAI and Anthropic, although with significantly less funding.

The firm has been increasingly focusing on investing in the essential infrastructure to support AI advancements, revealing in February a 1.2-billion-euro project to develop data centres and computing power in Sweden.

"Expanding our infrastructure in Europe is vital to empower our clients and to ensure that AI innovation and independence are central to Europe," expressed Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral, in a statement.

"We plan to persist with our investments in this sector, in view of the growing and consistent demand from governments, businesses, and research bodies wanting to create their own tailored AI setups, instead of relying on external cloud providers."

The deal was backed by a group of seven leading global banks, including Bpifrance, BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole CIB, HSBC, La Banque Postale, MUFG, and Natixis CIB.
