WhatsApp expand messaging to CarPlay and Garmin watches

New WhatsApp beta for iOS move beyond Siri to provide visual navigation for drivers

WhatsApp expand messaging to CarPlay and Garmin watches

WhatsApp has launched a significant update to its messaging ecosystem, introducing native support for Apple CarPlay and a dedicated application for Garmin smartwatches.

Previously, CarPlay users were restricted to basic hands-free interactions through Siri, with no ability to visually browse conversations.

The new beta version, released on Monday, 30 March 2026, introduces a structured interface featuring three primary tabs: Chat List, Call History, and Favourites.

To maintain driver safety, the chat list is restricted to interactions from the past 20 to 25 days, and users are prevented from scrolling through full message histories. Unread messages are now easily identifiable via a "blue dot" notification system.

Simultaneously, Meta has collaborated with Garmin to bring a comprehensive WhatsApp experience to the Garmin Connect IQ Store.

Compatible devices, including the Fenix 8 and Forerunner 970, now allow users to read the last ten messages per thread and reply using a built-in mini-keyboard or emojis.

Unlike previous notification-only mirrors, this native app works directly from the wrist, provided the paired smartphone remains within Bluetooth range.

Susan Lyman, Garmin’s Vice President of Consumer Sales, described the move as a "meaningful way to stay connected" while training or exploring.

Both the CarPlay and Garmin integrations maintain WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption standards for all private communications.

The CarPlay application is currently in its testing phase, available exclusively to iOS beta testers through the TestFlight app.

In addition to messaging, the new "Favourites" tab syncs directly with a user’s smartphone settings, ensuring that high-priority contacts are accessible with a single tap.

As these features move toward a stable public release, WhatsApp continues to expand its "multi-device" strategy, which recently included the rollout of multiple account support for iOS users on 27 March.
