Bryan Cranston teases where the 'Malcolm in the Middle' family really lives

Bryan Cranston, 70, returned to his iconic role as Hal for the revival Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, premiering Friday, April 10, on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.

In a recent chat with People, Cranston addressed the long-standing fan mystery: Where exactly does the Wilkerson family—or, technically, no last name—reside?

“I will tell you that we are right smack dab in the middle of the state geographically,” Cranston joked. When costar Jane Kaczmarek, 70, asked whether he meant the country or the state, Cranston clarified, “The state. We're in the middle of the state… very close, like 700 miles from everything that's important.”

While Cranston’s playful hint keeps things vague, he did rule out one state: “No, we’re not there,” he quipped about Rhode Island.

Kaczmarek recalled the reasoning behind the show’s ambiguous location and lack of last names. “Linwood [Boomer, series creator] really wanted this to be any family, anywhere.

You couldn’t say, ‘Oh, they’re Irish, that’s why. Oh, they’re Polish, that’s why.’ He didn’t want us to have a last name because he didn’t want people making assumptions about things.”

Boomer previously explained that leaving the location open allowed for creative freedom.

“If we wanted to do an episode at the beach, or at the lake, or with snow, earthquakes, or tornadoes—we don’t know where they live. We can do that.”

Even the family’s last name remains a non-factor. While “Wilkerson” appeared in a cut scene from the pilot, Boomer decided it wasn’t necessary.

“The minute you say a last name, you’re saying what their ethnicity is, what kind of people they are—and aren’t,” he said.

For Cranston, returning as Hal was like “discovering a really cherished old sweater that you put away and forgot about.”

He added, “It still fits, it feels comfortable, and it conjures up a lot of memories… It’s wonderful. The boys are fully grown now, and they too appreciate the good fortune they’ve had.”

Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair premieres Friday, April 10, bringing back the family fans have loved for over 20 years.
