Delivery driver dad tragically killed during teen carjacking attempt: Police

A New Jersey father, who worked as a delivery driver, lost his life when a teenager allegedly attempted to steal his vehicle.

Jhon Aponte Alarcon, age 46, was declared deceased after being hospitalized for injuries sustained in a car crash in Newark, New Jersey.

According to officials from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, Alarcon was making a delivery at 12:45pm and left his vehicle running while he placed a package on a doorstep.

An unnamed teen reportedly spotted the car and allegedly got in, attempting to drive off with it.

Alarcon rushed back to the vehicle, clinging to it as the suspect continued driving. The teenager collided with a parked car, causing Alarcon's vehicle to overturn and fatally injure the father of three boys.

The prosecutors indicated that the suspect fled the scene on foot. By Tuesday, he was apprehended and faced charges including first-degree murder, carjacking, vehicular homicide, fleeing an accident resulting in death, endangering an injured party, and vehicle theft. His identity hasn't been disclosed due to his age.

One of Alarcon's sons, Debyd Aponte, spoke to NBC affiliate WNBC in New York about his family’s grief.

He revealed they initially lacked full details regarding their father’s fate, only knowing he had been in a car wreck.

Aponte told WNBC, "This has been exceedingly tough. Dad was a diligent worker, just making an honest living. He was supporting us when this [heartbreaking event] occurred."

On a GoFundMe page created for funeral costs, Alarcon's son expressed, "Our lives turned upside down. One minute he was here, and the next he vanished. The depth of this sorrow is unlike anything we anticipated."
