Nebraska schoolgirl hospitalised after alleged assault by fellow male student
Millard Lefler Middle School staff provided medical aid to the injured student
A fourteen-year-old girl has been hospitalised following a violent physical assault at Millard Lefler Middle School in Nebraska. The incident occurred during dismissal in a school hallway on Tuesday, as confirmed by school officials on Thursday.
Reports from KOLN and the Lincoln Journal Star indicate that a male student of the same age allegedly struck the victim multiple times.
In a formal statement shared with families and PEOPLE, Principal Suiter confirmed that a student "was physically aggressive towards another," which necessitated immediate intervention from staff members.
While the names of the minors involved have not been released due to their age, the severity of the injuries has caused significant local concern.
The victim reportedly suffered swelling to her nose and a laceration above her eye requiring stitches; police spokeswoman Erika Thomas noted she may have also sustained a brain bleed.
Staff members quickly "connected the injured student with medical assistance" before she was interviewed by investigators at the hospital.
The male student is now facing legal and school-based consequences, including a charge of third-degree assault. "Parents, please help us reinforce the lessons we teach at school," Suiter added.
"We understand that not everyone is going to get along all the time, but there are healthy ways to resolve conflicts that do not include a physical reaction."
The school has since made counsellors and social workers available to support students who witnessed the distressing event.
This incident adds to a series of safety reviews currently being conducted by the Lincoln, Nebraska, Police Department.
