Dax Shepard reflects on complicated friendship with late Eric Dane

Dax Shepard revealed the unlikely friendship with late actor Eric Dane, one that began with hostility but ultimately turned into deep mutual respect.

Speaking at the New Orleans Book Festival alongside Anderson Cooper, Shepard revealed that his first impression of Dane during their time in recovery was far from positive.

“I met him in recovery, and we hated each other. I hated him,” Shepard admitted, describing the Euphoria star as someone he initially saw as “a bit of a bully.”

The tension between the two escalated during an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, where Shepard recalled confronting Dane after what he perceived as aggressive behavior toward another member.

The confrontation nearly turned physical, with both men stepping outside before others intervened.

Despite the heated start, Shepard said they continued attending the same meetings — a decision that slowly shifted their dynamic.

“Over time, I found myself starting to kind of relate to him. I heard his story,” Shepard said, noting that understanding Dane’s past changed his perspective.

According to Shepard, Dane opened up about a traumatic childhood, including the loss of his father at a young age. The shared experience of growing up without father figures became a turning point in their relationship.

“That little boy grew up without a dad, like I did,” Shepard explained. “He was searching for validation in ways I didn’t like — and probably ways he didn’t like in me either.”

Their connection deepened through continued honesty in meetings, eventually leading to a surprising moment of mutual admiration.

“I told him one of his shares was one of my favorites,” Shepard recalled. “And not long after, he said he thought he’d come to fall in love with me. That’s when everything changed.”

From that point on, the two formed a close bond, supporting each other through recovery and personal struggles.

Dane, who died at 53 following a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), had been open about his battles with addiction, even discussing them during an appearance on Shepard’s podcast in 2024.

Reflecting on his friend’s later years, Shepard praised Dane’s courage in facing his illness publicly.

“For someone so focused on strength and masculinity, to become the face of this disease — I think that was the bravest thing he ever did,” he said.

Looking back, Shepard described Dane not as the man he once clashed with, but as someone deeply human.

“I came to fall in love with a very scared man trying to become who he wanted to be,” he said. “And I ended up loving him so much.”
